LIFE BEYOND WORK
Work and its influence on us Many people find great pleasure in the status, identity, challenge, social interaction, routine and level of self-esteem that can be derived from work. If you are one of these people (or know someone who is) and are nearing retirement then you may need to identify something other than the work you have been doing to replace some if not all of the above. Your successful transition from work to retirement can depend significantly on your perceptions of work and how it relates to your personal and social identity. It is crucial that you plan to replace those things you think you will miss the most from work such as friendships, challenges, routine and status with opportunities other than paid full time work. While most people plan for their financial future, many do not plan for the productive and creative use of the increased time retirement brings. Some people become anxious, uncertain what the future holds and how they are going to deal with what lays ahead. For others it is a giant relief and release from full time work, where they are able to spend their time doing what they want to do. |
When you have worked a full and productive life and fulfilled your responsibilities to society and your family it should be a time for you to take the opportunity to live a life without the obligation of work.
Retirement is not just about stopping work it is about a transition or a journey into a new passage of your life that could continue for at least thirty years. The transition is not just from work to retirement - it is adjusting to a new way of life choices where your own personal accomplishments can be pursued. |
