Work and Leisure

We have never been trained for leisure yet many Australians are facing at least twenty years out of work once they retire.

Without an awareness of how to find meaning, stimulation, purpose and challenge in retirement, the life of leisure can become an unwanted dream.

While many people enjoy leisure during their  working years, the removal of paid work often leads to a loss of context for leisure - it is no longer the reward for the effort of work.

Fulfilling leisure provides the individual with intrinsic benefits such as:
  • Mental stimulation
  • Sense of accomplishmential contact
  • Sense of connectedness
  • Structure
  • Physical well-being

Is it the antidote to our busyness and is it the nirvana that older adult s are looking for when they retire?

Since the time of the ancient Greeks, scholars, modern educators and everyday people have struggled to adequately define “leisure”. For Aristotle and his fellow Greeks it was central to life, as they knew it.

Planning for a life of leisure

So how do we plan for leisure - it starts with understanding how paid work has influenced your life and how you can take advantage of the skills and experiences gained in your working life so far.

We start to reframe the influence that paid work has on your life .

The key to participating in leisure that enhances your self esteem is to identify a pursuit that provides you with the positive feelings that you derive from paid work. If work did not give you any intrinsic benefits then it is even more important that you find some fulfilment.

A pursuit that you apply yourself to, has meaning and purpose, requires you to improve and develop and most importantly is enjoyable.

This is what Serious Leisure can deliver!
