.
The kid in the pineapple picking hat is me aged 14 in 1976.
My Dad had just retired and we shifted out to a place called Burns Beach about an hour north of Perth on the coast where I observed the loss of work identity first hand through him and his mates. In meeting anyone new they would invariably thrust out their hand and say “Jack Kikeros – ex construction AV Jennings” or “Claude Scrivener – ex fitter and turner Sandersons”.
This to me, as a teenager, was a weird obsession with a mystical thing called paid work. So after completing a Bachelor of Applied Science in leisure studies as a mature age student, I set about working with people who have left work, or nearing the end of their traditional working time, and have uncertainty about finding meaning, connection and fulfilment in the next phase of their lives. I also work with those overwhelmed by the busyness caused by the competing elements in their life.
I help those considering life beyond work understand what paid work means, or meant to them, and then guide them to repurpose their knowledge, skills and other personal attributes into areas other than paid work. By doing so, they replace the non-financial benefits of work - what they liked the most and missed the most about their paid working life with leisure and gifting their time and talents.
For the overwhelmed I use leisure as therapy to create time and space in their lives to create more easeful and effective lives
I'm a leisure coach, I write, I run workshops, train people and give talks. I also work with community based sporting and recreation organisations providing them with professional support.
